@ KOLO - Thanks for your comment. Can you please tell us a bit more information? How old is your friend? What is their purpose for learning English (e.g., work, school, travel, etc.)? Do they live in an English-speaking country or are they somewhere else?

@Jenny -- GREAT question! And I am happy to tell you yes, TIRF is interested in supporting doctoral candidates who are doing research on English in the workplace. Please have a look at http://www.tirfonline.org/research-grants/doctoral-dissertation-grants/apply-for-a-grant/bilingualismplurilingualism-in-business-and-industry/ for information about the kinds of research related to this topic that we wish to promote. We will be posting the call for the 2011 Doctoral Dissertation Grant applications around January first. In order to be eligible for a TIRF grant, you must be accepted into a legitimate doctoral program and must have had your research plan approved by your doctoral committee. Please do keep in touch with TIRF as you move ahead with your aspirations. One more thought: Please go to http://www.tirfonline.org/resources/references/ There you will find a series of reference lists, including one on "Language in Business and Industry." Perhaps it will be of use to you. Also, if you have some references which we should include on this reference list please follow the instructions about how to submit them. Thanks, and please keep in touch! Kathi Bailey (TIRF President)

I want to teach others' to read, write, and speak the English language well. :) I am currently certified to teach English as a Second Language (ESL) to children, and I am taking coursework toward certification in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). I have a bachelor's degree in education and a master's degree in adult education. My thesis project was on "Workplace Literacy." I would like to pursue a doctoral program to continue to promote workplace literacy and would like to know if there are opportunities for grants or scholarships for doctoral students in support of this area of study.
