New TIRF Research Topic: Artificial Intelligence

We are pleased to announce the approval of a new TIRF Research Topic—Artificial Intelligence (AI)—now published on the Foundation’s website. This new topic reflects the rapidly growing influence of AI across language teaching, learning, assessment, and research, and responds to increasing global interest from educators, researchers, institutions, and policymakers.

AI-enabled tools—from large language models and automated feedback systems to adaptive learning platforms and AI-supported assessment—are reshaping how English is taught and learned worldwide. At the same time, these developments raise important questions about ethics, equity, data privacy, academic integrity, teacher roles, and the long-term implications of AI-mediated learning. TIRF’s new Research Topic invites rigorous, evidence-based inquiry that examines both the opportunities and the challenges associated with AI in English language education.

Of particular interest are studies that explore AI-supported instructional design; human–AI collaboration in communicative tasks; AI-mediated assessment and feedback; teacher education and professional development; linguistic diversity and global Englishes in AI-driven systems; and the use of AI-enabled tools in applied linguistics research. TIRF also welcomes research and scholarship focused on institutional policy, governance, and practical guidance to ensure responsible, transparent, and human-centered uses of AI in educational contexts.

By establishing AI as a stand-alone Research Topic, TIRF continues its long-standing commitment to advancing timely, globally relevant research that informs practice, supports educators, and promotes equitable learning opportunities. We encourage researchers, practitioners, and partners to review the full topic description on TIRF’s website—click here to do so—and consider how their work can contribute to this evolving and critical area of inquiry.
