Just last month, the TIRF Board of Trustees adopted TESOL International Association’s statement in response to the U.S. Executive Order designating English as the official language of the United States. In doing so, TIRF joins TESOL—and a growing number of other organizations—in expressing concern over the implications of this policy for multilingual individuals, immigrant communities, and educational systems nationwide.

TIRF remains committed to promoting multilingualism, linguistic rights, and equitable access to educational and social opportunities. While recognizing the importance of English for communication and integration, TIRF emphasizes that language diversity strengthens societies and that policies must respect and support individuals’ home languages and cultural identities.

By endorsing TESOL’s statement, TIRF reaffirms its belief that language policies should foster inclusion, uphold human rights, and recognize the rich linguistic diversity that defines the United States and global communities. We stand alongside educators, researchers, and advocates who work tirelessly to support language learners of all backgrounds.

We invite our colleagues and partners to review TESOL’s full statement and to continue supporting efforts that prioritize multilingualism, equity, and inclusion in education and beyond.
