Editor’s Comment:  As long-term readers of TIRF Today know well, summer (in the northern hemisphere) is when the Foundation conducts its midyear appeal. This year, however, there is a new twist to the effort, as noted below by Wyatt Boykin, TIRF’s new intern.

News Flash: TIRF launches its 2018 Midyear Appeal with the “20/20 Competition.”

Dateline: Monterey, Wyatt Boykin Reporting

Ryan Damerow, TIRF’s Chief Operating Officer, has challenged Kathi Bailey, TIRF’s President, to a test of fundraising strength and stamina. Throughout the months of July and August 2018, they will go head-to-head in a fierce contest to see who can convince the most new donors to join the TIRF community.

“I know he has his MBA as well as his TESOL MA,” said Bailey about Damerow. “So, yes, you could say that his business background may give him an advantage in fundraising. But let’s be clear: I know hundreds – possibly thousands — of people in language education internationally. Clearly, I am better connected than Ryan is to reach out to potential donors.”

“Kathi is certainly well meaning and dedicated to the Foundation,” said Damerow when interviewed by this reporter. “But I have superior technological skills and greater knowledge of finance. Sure, she has a PhD in Applied Linguistics, but fundraising has to go beyond the theoretical!”

Bailey’s reaction to this comment was to laugh. “Ha!,” she retorted. “Bring it on, Ryan! I challenge you to put your money where your mouth is! What are you willing to bet that you can get more new donors than I can?”

Of course, Damerow was prepared for this sort of move. With obvious confidence, he replied, “I’ll wager 20% of one check’s take home pay.” Bailey replied, “You’re on!”

If you are not currently a TIRF donor, be on the lookout for an email from Damerow or Bailey in the days ahead, but choose wisely. Their money is on the line!

Lest current TIRF donors should feel overlooked, the Trustees want you to know how much your continued support is needed and appreciated. The Foundation would not be where it is today without you. As usual, online gifts can be accepted by clicking here. We can also accept checks drawn on U.S. banks and made out to TIRF via paper mail: TIRF, 177 Webster Street, Monterey, CA 93940, USA.
